Former Springbok head coach Nick Mallett has warned that Eben Etzebeth cannot rely on reputation alone as he prepares to return from a prolonged injury absence in next month's fixture against Argentina.
The most-capped Springbok of all time has played just one match since last November after serving a ban for eye-gouging, then suffering an injury on his return with the Sharks and a concussion that ruled him out of the July internationals. Mallett singled out the lock as an example of the challenge facing Rassie Erasmus in assessing the readiness of 10 players returning from injury ahead of the All Blacks series.
Warm-up carries high stakes
The August 8 meeting with Los Pumas in Buenos Aires serves as the Boks' final match before the Test series commences at Ellis Park 14 days later. Erasmus has named a 44-man squad that includes Etzebeth alongside fellow returnees Lood de Jager, Franco Mostert, Siya Kolisi, Handre Pollard, Ethan Hooker, Canan Moodie, Andre Esterhuizen, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Morne van den Berg.
Mallett acknowledged the squad's strength in depth but questioned whether a single fixture would prove sufficient preparation for those who have been sidelined. "What's important from the squad selected is the freshness, enthusiasm and game-readiness of the group when they play the first Test against New Zealand," Mallett said on the Talking Boks podcast.
Pollard, Hooker, Moodie and Esterhuizen all turned out in the Nations Championship fixtures but sustained injuries that limited them to single appearances each. All four have overcome those setbacks to make the squad.
Selection window narrows
The Buenos Aires encounter represents a compressed timeline for Erasmus to evaluate match fitness and form. Whether the clash against Argentina and the Boks' training intensity will provide adequate preparation remains the central question facing the head coach as he finalises his combinations for the opening Test.
For Etzebeth, the fixture carries additional weight. After a stop-start campaign that has seen him feature for just 80 minutes in nine months, the lock must demonstrate he can reclaim the form that has made him a cornerstone of the Springbok pack. The All Blacks series looms as the defining challenge of the season, and Erasmus will know within a fortnight whether his returning players are ready to meet it.
