Malcolm Marx has confirmed he will depart Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo Bay at the end of the 2026/27 season, bringing his six-year spell in Japan to a close. The 32-year-old hooker, who has earned 82 Test caps for South Africa, announced the decision on Friday, stating family circumstances had prompted his return home.
"My time with the Spears has been a memorable experience for both me and my family, one that we will always treasure," Marx said. "Although this chapter is coming to an end, my commitment to the Spears remains as strong as ever. I am fully focused on the upcoming season and will continue to give everything I have to the team, with the goal of finishing this journey on a high note."
Marx joined the Shining Arcs in 2021 before moving to Kubota Spears the same year, winning the Japan Rugby League One title in 2023 and finishing as runners-up last season. His performances in Japan earned him the World Rugby Men's 15-a-Side Player of the Year award.
Whilst Marx has not disclosed his next destination, reports continue to link the double World Cup winner with a move to Pretoria. A switch to the Bulls would reunite him with director of rugby Johan Ackermann, under whom he played during his time at the Lions. The Sharks have also been mentioned as potential suitors following Bongi Mbonambi's departure to the Stormers.
Marx will remain with the Spears for one final campaign in Japan before returning to South African rugby in mid-2027.
