Elrigh Louw will make his first Springbok start of the season against Argentina on Saturday, capping a remarkable recovery from an injury that once cast doubt over his rugby future.

The 26-year-old Bulls loose forward suffered a horrific knee and leg injury during a United Rugby Championship victory over the Lions at the end of January 2025, tearing ligaments in his left knee and breaking his leg. The severity of the damage raised genuine fears his career could be over. Instead, Louw returned to action ahead of schedule late last year, backed by his family and medical staff, and has now been rewarded with a place in the starting XV at Estadio José Amalfitani.

"Just the motivation to be back in the Springbok squad was more than enough for me to continue working hard and play rugby to the best of my ability," Louw said. "To forget about the injury, also mentally, was a big part for me."

Louw, who has earned 14 Test caps since his debut in 2022, made his only other appearance this season off the bench against Scotland in the Nations Championship. His recall to the starting side reaffirms the sacrifices made during months of gruelling rehabilitation. "You get your opportunity, and you just do the best of your ability to use it," he said.

Maul battle awaits

Having experienced the Springboks' narrow defeat to Los Pumas in Argentina in 2024, Louw knows what awaits this weekend. He expects another bruising battle up front, with new laws placing even greater emphasis on the maul. The Springboks have placed considerable focus on that area in preparation for Argentina's traditionally physical forward pack.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, who will make his first Test appearance of the year alongside Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Morne van den Berg, warned his side they would be in for a massive battle in front of a passionate home crowd. "It's a tough place to come and play, but that's exactly what we need as a group," Kolisi said.

Louw's return adds depth to a loose-forward unit that has carried momentum through the Nations Championship. His ability to deliver at set-piece and in the tight exchanges will be tested against a Los Pumas pack renowned for its physicality. For a player who once faced the prospect of never playing again, Saturday's start represents far more than another cap.
