Haashim Pead's anticipated return to Cape Town appears dead in the water after the Lions set transfer fee conditions the Stormers are unwilling to meet.
The Lions have demanded what would be a record transfer fee for the 21-year-old scrumhalf — reportedly more than double what the Sharks received when Siya Kolisi moved to the Stormers — and further insisted on full payment upfront. Pead, who had offered to contribute a portion of the fee himself, is contracted at Ellis Park until 2028.
The Lions' refusal to engage with Pead's agent during key stages of the negotiation further complicated matters. Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli has not responded to requests for comment.
With the Stormers now stepping back, and interest from other clubs unlikely to produce a deal given the Lions' stance, Pead looks set to remain in Johannesburg — where he has managed just 269 minutes of URC rugby and has yet to appear in the Currie Cup, amounting to roughly three matches out of a possible 26 with the senior squad. He faces stiff competition for the No. 9 jersey from Morné van den Berg and Nico Steyn.
The standoff is a significant blow to Pead's development ambitions. Named Junior Springbok Player of the Year in 2025 — breaking records previously held by Antoine Dupont — the Bo-Kaap-raised Bishops product represented the SA A side against Zimbabwe on 20 June and has been on the Springbok radar. Whether the public nature of the impasse prompts the Lions to give him more consistent game time remains to be seen.
