Kwagga Smith has signed a three-year contract with the Bulls, ending an eight-year stint in Japan that began at Yamaha Júbilo — now the Shizuoka Blue Revs — in 2018.

Smith, 33, returns to South African rugby carrying a knee injury sustained in May 2026 when he tore his ACL and meniscus playing for the Blue Revs. He has been cleared to return to play at the end of December and expects to be available early in the new year.

"I'm already jogging. I miss the rugby, but I'm feeling good," said Smith. "Playing under Johan Ackermann previously was one of my best experiences. I'm looking forward to getting back by early next year."

Ackermann, who coached Smith at the Lions, was equally enthusiastic about the reunion. "He's a team man who has grown into a stalwart, and it's been a privilege to watch his career unfold and establish himself as one of the best backrows in world rugby. Wherever he goes, he makes a difference."

Smith's cv is formidable: two World Cup winners' medals (2019 and 2023), the 2021 British & Irish Lions series, Rugby Championship titles in 2019, 2024 and 2025, Commonwealth Games gold with the Blitzboks in Glasgow in 2014, and Olympic bronze in Rio in 2016. He has accumulated more than 60 Test caps, operating at No 6 and No 8, while maintaining a place in the Springbok squad throughout his Japan years.

His move to Loftus is timed around family as well as rugby. His wife is due in January, and Smith noted that the Bulls' location made the timing ideal.

Bulls CEO Edgar Rathbone framed the signing in terms of the standards Smith will set inside the squad. "He has never lost his hunger. His work rate, physicality and fearlessness are exactly what we want in Vodacom Bulls colours. He will drive standards inside our group."

Smith began his 15-man career at the Lions, where he was part of the 2015 Currie Cup-winning side, before leaving for Japan. His arrival at Loftus adds a serial winner to a back row already well stocked with talent.
