Siya Kolisi will lead the Springboks in a Test match for the first time in 2026 when South Africa face Argentina at Estadio José Amalfitani on Saturday night, and Rassie Erasmus has made clear his captain is the least of his worries.
The double World Cup-winning flanker has not featured for the Boks since the unofficial international against the Barbarians in Gqeberha on 20 June, sidelined by injury throughout the Nations Championship fixtures against England, Scotland and Wales. Yet Erasmus expressed complete faith in Kolisi's ability to step straight back into Test rugby, citing a pattern established during the 2019 and 2023 World Cup campaigns.
"If there is one player we have learned we never have to worry about when it comes to returning from injury it is Siya," Erasmus said after naming a side featuring 13 changes from the team that started the 43-0 victory over Wales in Durban on 18 July. "You will recall that in 2023 he was involved in a race against time to recover from quite a big injury (it was a similar story in 2019) and he came through that well. Because of his age he has learned how to deal with those injuries. He knows how to deal with those injuries, how to rehab and handle the pressure of getting himself back in time (for a target date)."
The Springbok coach expects Kolisi to play just over a half before Marco van Staden takes over at openside flanker, a rotation designed to ease the captain back to full match fitness. Erasmus's greater concern lies with the lock pairing of Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager, both of whom return alongside Kolisi but have seen less recent action. The coach indicated he would monitor their endurance more closely than Kolisi's, given the physical demands of the second-row position and their longer absence from competitive rugby.
Continuity in the back three
Aphelele Fassi retains the number 15 jersey for a third consecutive start, having featured in the victories over Scotland and Wales despite an injury-interrupted season. The Toshiba Brave Lupus-bound full-back delivered a mixed performance in the Wales rout, showing moments of quality alongside unforced errors. Edwill van der Merwe and Canan Moodie complete the back three, with Moodie deployed at outside centre in partnership with Andre Esterhuizen. Scrum-half Cobus Wiese is the only other survivor from the Durban starting XV.
The wholesale changes reflect Erasmus's dual mandate of managing player workload while assessing depth ahead of the remainder of the Nations Championship campaign. Saturday's encounter in Buenos Aires will test whether the returning trio can rediscover their rhythm against a Pumas side eager to exploit any rustiness in the Springbok ranks.
