Siya Kolisi's post-match embrace of Ardie Savea's children at DHL Stadium has been hailed as the defining image of the recent Springboks–All Blacks series by veteran playmaker Jimmy Gopperth.
The Springbok captain was captured on video breaking away from his duties at the final whistle to hug Savea's daughter and sons on the sidelines, a spontaneous act that resonated far beyond Cape Town. Gopperth, who was preparing to play for the Classic All Blacks invitation team in Brazil when he saw the footage, described it as the essence of the sport.
"Rugby, as a sport, is about camaraderie and about connecting with the players you play against and with," Gopperth said. "The All Blacks have got such a history with South Africa. Yes, it's war on the field. But when that whistle goes for the end of the game they're like a group of brothers. A lot of those players really enjoy each other's company."
The former Hurricanes and Wasps fly-half singled out both captains for their leadership qualities. "That video with Siya and Kobe was awesome to watch," he said. "What Kolisi and Savea bring to their group as leaders is that togetherness. The best of rugby."
Gopperth's comments came amid a series marked by controversy over scrummaging tactics and Rassie Erasmus's team selections, yet the mutual respect between the two camps remained evident.
