Cheslin Kolbe's anticipated return to the DHL Stormers from the start of next season will address a key deficiency in the Cape side's game model this campaign. The 32-year-old, who confirmed his homecoming on social media over the weekend, described the decision as "one of the most emotional and difficult" of his career.
The deal was finalised through the combined efforts of the Stormers, Roc Nations Sports and a third party, understood to be an international sports betting company, with SA Rugby's PONI structure providing additional support. Stormers director of rugby John Dobson has previously identified Kolbe as central to the franchise's Project 2029 vision.
Kolbe's arrival will bolster the Stormers' backline options alongside Leolin Zas and Suleiman Hartzenberg, who have been the first-choice wings this season. The move reunites him with Siya Kolisi and Wilco Louw, both of whom are also returning to Cape Town next season. Kolisi, who played more than 100 matches for the Stormers before departing for the Hollywoodbets Sharks in 2021, is understood to be returning on significantly reduced terms. Louw, whose scrummaging anchored Western Province's 2017 Currie Cup final triumph before his move to Harlequins, will add depth to an already strong front row that includes Neethling Fouche and Zachary Porthen.
