Francois Klopper will start at tighthead prop for the Vodacom Bulls in Saturday's United Rugby Championship semifinal against Glasgow Warriors at Murrayfield, with Springbok Wilco Louw named among the replacements.

The selection represents a significant vote of confidence in the 26-year-old Klopper, who has deputised regularly this season during Louw's absences through injury and compassionate leave. His most recent outing came in the quarterfinal demolition of Munster, where he delivered a commanding performance at scrum time whilst Louw recovered from illness.

Bulls coach Johan Ackermann confirmed the decision was merit-based rather than tactical. "It is on performance," Ackermann said in naming the side. "I felt he did his part in the games where we didn't have access to Wilco. And when Wilco was ill, Kloppies has shown that he can perform well. So we just felt that it's good to keep that momentum going. He's match fit and everything is ready to go."

Louw's impact role

Louw, widely regarded as one of the most destructive scrummagers in world rugby, featured regularly off the bench for the Springboks last year when Thomas du Toit occupied the starting jersey. The role is therefore familiar territory for the veteran tighthead, who will be joined by fellow internationals Marco van Staden and Jan-Hendrik Wessels as front-row cover.

Ackermann suggested Louw's experience could prove decisive in the closing stages against the URC's top-ranked side. "Hopefully Wilco, with the rest of the bench, can be in a position where they can finish the game," he explained. "We obviously don't know how the second half is going to be. Hopefully we don't chase the game. But if so, then hopefully the bench can do it for us. If we don't need it, somebody with the experience of Wilco can come on and hopefully again prove his qualities in that last bit of the second half."

The Bulls have named 11 Springboks in their starting XV for the Murrayfield encounter, with a further five among the replacements. Captain Marcell Coetzee will celebrate his 100th appearance for the franchise in what represents the Bulls' bid for a fourth final appearance in five seasons.

Klopper's elevation poses an intriguing selection question for Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus ahead of the November international window, particularly if the young tighthead continues his upward trajectory against Glasgow's formidable pack.
