The Junior Springboks opened their 2026 Junior World Championship campaign with a 104-7 Pool A victory over Uruguay at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi on Saturday, running in 16 tries in a display that included a 50-0 half-time lead.

Jordan Steenkamp and Risima Khosa both crossed for hat-tricks, while Khuthadzo Rasivhaga and Jayden Brits each scored twice. Markus Muller opened the account, with further tries from Ethan Adams, Cheswill Jooste, Siphosethu Mnebelele and Gert Kemp, plus a penalty try. Uruguay's only points came from a consolation try after the final hooter.

Game captain Rambo Kubheka, who made way in the second half with squad captain Mnebelele taking the armband, was measured in his assessment. "The boys played well and I couldn't have asked for more in our first game," he said, while echoing head coach Kevin Foote's acknowledgement of Uruguay's resolve throughout.

The tone from the camp, though, is one of deliberate focus rather than satisfaction. The defending champions face hosts Georgia on Thursday — a side Kubheka knows well. "We've played them three times already this year, so we know what's coming. They are a hard-working, physical side and we are very clear about the challenge they will bring."

Steenkamp credited the forward platform for his hat-trick but was equally measured looking ahead: "We're pleased with the result, but we know we'll be tested again against Georgia."

The Junior Boks took Sunday as a recovery day before resuming preparations on Monday.
