South Africa's Junior Springboks have successfully defended the World Rugby U20 Championship, beating France 16-5 in Tbilisi, Georgia, on Saturday to claim a third title overall.
Fly-half Yaqeen Ahmed, 19, was the architect of the win, contributing eight points through a conversion and two penalties. His first-half penalties gave South Africa a 6-0 lead at the break, with France fortunate not to trail by more after Romeo Bonnard Martin had a try chalked off by the TMO.
Flanker Raphael Audebert gave Les Bleuets hope six minutes into the second half, but another Bonnard Martin lock partner Baptiste Veschambre had a further try disallowed by the video referee. Centre Markus Muller then crossed to restore South Africa's cushion, with Ahmed adding the conversion and a penalty in the final seconds to seal the result.
The win mirrors last year's final, which South Africa also won against New Zealand. Their only other title came in 2012, also against the All Blacks. France were chasing a fourth U20 world title.
