Sharks prop Kai Pratt, one of South Africa's most promising young front-rowers, has returned an adverse analytical finding for an anabolic steroid following a doping test conducted on April 10 ahead of the SANZAAR U20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha.
SAIDS CEO Khalid Galant confirmed the finding after News24 first reported the case on Wednesday. The 18-year-old has requested a B-sample analysis, with the disciplinary process still at an early stage.
"The athlete has received a notice of allegation that a substance was found in his system," Galant said. "It was an anabolic steroid, and the athlete has requested a B-sample to be tested. A date still needs to be set for that process, and the athlete hasn't decided whether they will contest the allegation or the charge."
Galant was clear that no ban is in effect at this stage. "No hearing has been set, and no decision has been rendered. A ban only comes into place when a player has been charged and has pleaded guilty."
The outcome of the B-sample analysis will determine whether the matter advances to a formal hearing.
Pratt's situation is further complicated by a serious foot injury sustained during the Junior Springboks' match against Argentina U20 on April 27, which required surgery. His rehabilitation is expected to take approximately six months.
The Sharks confirmed they are unable to comment on specifics while the process remains ongoing, stating that the franchise "takes all matters relating to player welfare, education, and compliance with anti-doping regulations extremely seriously."
Pratt represented SA U18 last year and was included in the Springboks' first alignment camp of 2026. Galant noted that SAIDS has been running anti-doping education sessions with almost all provincial teams ahead of the Craven and Grant Khomo tournaments, with retired professionals assisting at player engagement stands in Gqeberha and Durban.
