Ireland won the first of two WXV Global Series Tests against South Africa 40-27 at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, with the Bok Women showing enough promise to suggest next Saturday's rematch will be closer.
The half-time score of 21-17 reflected a tight, competitive first half that swung repeatedly. South Africa actually led 12-7 after Erin King was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle in the 24th minute, with Vainah Ubisi crashing over following a patient build-up and Jakkie Cilliers adding the conversion. Aseza Hele had opened the Bok Women's account with a 30-metre finish on the left wing, while Ireland's first points came through Aoife Dalton in the eighth minute after South Africa's unforced errors handed the visitors early field position.
Linda Djougang and Maria Tshiremba traded tries before the break, with Jane Clohessy adding a third Irish try just after the hooter — Dannah O'Brien's flawless boot across five conversions ultimately proving a decisive factor.
Ireland asserted control early in the second half. Beibhinn Parsons was put into space up the right flank two minutes after the restart to make it 26-17, and King converted her own try in the 52nd minute to stretch the margin to 33-17. Djougang's second — a pick-and-drive effort in the 74th minute — effectively sealed the win.
The Bok Women had moments. Lerato Makua crossed with 12 minutes remaining while Eve Higgins was in the sin-bin to trim the deficit, and Alichia Arries added a late consolation. Yonela Ngxingolo marked her 50th Test cap when a new front row and Logan Welman at No 8 were introduced around the hour mark, but the changes could not shift momentum.
The hosts' lack of forward dominance and a string of unforced errors at critical moments — including a crooked lineout throw on Ireland's five-metre line when well-positioned — cost them scoring opportunities that could have changed the complexion of the game.
The two sides meet again at Athlone Stadium next Saturday in the second and final Test of the series.
