Ethan Hooker is set to undergo shoulder surgery this week after dislocating the joint during the Sharks' URC clash against the Ospreys, with the full extent of the damage — and his recovery timeline — only expected to become clear once surgeons operate.
Hooker suffered the injury when Luke Morgan landed on him as he grounded the ball for a try. Morgan was not carded on the night, and a URC citing officer subsequently ruled the incident did not meet the red card threshold, a decision that has drawn significant scrutiny.
Sharks head coach JP Pietersen confirmed the 23-year-old flew back to South Africa and has since consulted with a surgeon. "He is probably going to go for surgery sometime this week," Pietersen said. "Obviously, when they open up the shoulder, they will see something different, so I don't have an exact time on how long he will be out for."
Pietersen also confirmed the Sharks engaged with URC head of refereeing Tappe Henning over the incident but indicated he has accepted the outcome. "It is what it is, and it is out of my control. It is more for the referees and what they need to do."
The Sharks travel to Edinburgh's Hive Stadium for their Round 16 fixture on Friday.
