Deon Fourie faces a potentially career-defining scan after going off injured in the 11th minute of the Stormers' URC match against Ulster, the victim of a croc roll by Ulster captain Ian Henderson. Fourie initially attempted to play on before being withdrawn and replaced by Paul de Villiers. Henderson received a yellow card for the incident, subsequently upgraded to a 20-minute red following a bunker review.

Stormers defence coach Norman Laker confirmed Fourie will return to South Africa for a knee scan. "He will fly back to South Africa and get a scan on his knee for diagnosis of the injury," Laker said, adding that no medical feedback had been received at the time of his comments.

Laker also flagged a second incident involving Evan Roos, who was cleaned out in the same manner later in the match. "If you look back at that game, they cleaned out Evan the same way; luckily, Evan was a lone cleaner," Laker said. "It's not nice to lose one of your top and most capped players in the team with an injury like that, so I do think there must be consequences."

The injury is Fourie's third significant setback across the past two seasons, following leg and bicep injuries. The knee concern carries a grim parallel — in the 2023 World Cup final, Fourie entered the match in the third minute as a replacement for Bongi Mbonambi, who suffered a similar arm injury from a comparable clearout by Shannon Frizell. Should the knee damage prove serious enough to end Fourie's URC campaign, it may also mark the close of his playing career.
