Tournament mirrors World Cup demands

Defence coach Jerry Flannery has revealed the Springboks view the Nations Championship as a crucial dress rehearsal for the 2025 Rugby World Cup, with the tournament's structure offering a rare opportunity to simulate the pressures of a global campaign.

South Africa sit atop the Southern Hemisphere standings on points difference, level with New Zealand on 15 competition points as they prepare to face Italy on Saturday. The nature of the tournament means their path to the final could hinge on bonus points and points differential, particularly given their fixture list includes France and Ireland whilst New Zealand face Scotland, Wales and England.

"The tour is a good representative for us going into a World Cup next year where players have to assemble and play matches on a consistent basis in a short period of time," Flannery said on Tuesday. "We're not sure how much we will rotate during this period, so for us it's very much like knock-out stages to play group stages, head into a Round of 16 before the quarterfinal, semifinal and Final."

Limited preparation time

The condensed schedule mirrors World Cup conditions in another critical respect: restricted preparation time. Players arriving from club commitments, particularly those whose teams reach play-offs, leave national coaches with minimal training windows ahead of Test matches. The Boks held their first session on Monday after many squad members featured for their United Rugby Championship sides the previous weekend.

Flannery emphasised the immediate priority remains securing victory against Italy before considerations of bonus points enter the equation. The match represents the opening fixture of the Northern Hemisphere leg, with the defending world champions seeking to maintain their position at the summit ahead of sterner examinations against two Six Nations powerhouses.

The tournament structure offers South Africa a rare chance to test squad depth and tactical variations under genuine competitive pressure, with the Australian World Cup looming as the ultimate target for Rassie Erasmus's side.
