The DHL Stormers secured their place in the United Rugby Championship semi-finals with a comprehensive 44-21 victory over Cardiff at DHL Stadium, but the triumph was overshadowed by an injury to Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu that left the Springbok flyhalf requiring crutches to leave the field.

Feinberg-Mngomezulu was injured in the act of scoring a second-half try that re-established daylight on the scoreboard after Cardiff had threatened a comeback. The pivot rounded off following wing Seabelo Senatla's break from a misdirected Cardiff cross kick, extending what had been a seven-point advantage to 12. He remained on his side in the in-goal area as teammates celebrated, leaving scrumhalf Imad Khan to attempt the unsuccessful conversion.

The nature and severity of the injury remain unclear pending medical assessment, though the sight of Feinberg-Mngomezulu departing the tunnel on crutches after the final whistle cast a shadow over the Stormers' celebrations in front of a crowd exceeding 30,000. His availability for the semi-final appears doubtful.

Forward dominance seals progression

The Stormers' set-piece superiority proved the foundation for their six-try performance, with prop Ntuthuko Mchunu claiming man-of-the-match honours. His scrummaging prowess forced a 31st-minute yellow card for Cardiff's Keiron Assiratti, and the hosts capitalised immediately through Leolin Zas following some Damian Willemse creativity.

Cardiff had broken the deadlock against the run of play when Cam Winnett raced away after the Stormers conceded possession inside the visitors' 22, but the response was swift. Andre-Hugo Venter touched down from a driving maul before Mchunu powered over following a sharp lineout move to establish control.

The Welsh outfit briefly threatened after the interval, with tries from Taine Basham and James Botham sandwiching Feinberg-Mngomezulu's score, but their momentum stalled when Javan Sebastian was sin-binned following Paul de Villiers' try. Jurie Matthee's 68th-minute penalty extended the buffer to 13 points before JJ Kotze sealed the result, with Matthee adding the conversion and a further penalty.

The Stormers now await the winner of the Leinster versus Emirates Lions quarter-final, having secured their first semi-final appearance in the competition since 2023. Whether they will do so with their first-choice pivot remains the pressing question facing John Dobson's coaching staff.
