Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu is in contention to face Argentina in Buenos Aires on August 8 after recovering from surgery on the injury he sustained on May 30. Rassie Erasmus confirmed after Saturday's 43-0 win over Wales that the Stormers fly-half will travel with the squad to Argentina.
Erasmus also revealed that Handré Pollard was unavailable for the Wales clash due to a hamstring strain — leaving the Boks without both their first-choice tens for the Durban Test. Pollard has since recovered. "We didn't have Sacha, we didn't have Handré," Erasmus said. "We had him [Moyo] and Manie."
With the two senior options unavailable, Erasmus handed 20-year-old Vusi Moyo his Test debut at Kings Park Stadium. Moyo kicked three conversions across 47 minutes before Manie Libbok finished the match. Erasmus explained the decision not to start Libbok: "Putting a guy on in the second half at that age against a quality team like Wales" was the preferred approach rather than burdening Moyo with a second-half pressure situation.
The injury-forced selections have underlined a depth concern at ten. Erasmus is also tracking Junior Springboks fly-half Yaqeen Ahmed, who played a key role in South Africa's U20 World Championship title win on Saturday, as another option to bring into the broader mix. Erasmus had opted to keep Moyo with the senior squad rather than release him for that tournament. "We felt so bad keeping Vusi here and not playing [at the U20s], so it was next man up," he said.
Erasmus was clear that Willemse was not considered as a ten solution, with the preference firmly on developing specialist fly-halves within the system.
