Eben Etzebeth delivered one of the finest individual moments seen at Kings Park as the Hollywoodbets Sharks claimed a statement 26-20 victory over defending champions Leinster in the second round of the United Rugby Championship.

With Leinster leading 15-14 in the 69th minute, South Africa's most-capped international threw a dummy on his own 10-metre line and produced an astonishing burst of pace to race into the opposition half. The lock passed to wing Edwill van der Merwe, stayed in support to receive the return ball, then delivered an outstanding offload in the tackle to send captain André Esterhuizen over for what proved the match-winning score.

Springbok steel delivers five-pointer

The result leaves the Sharks top of the standings with a perfect 10 points from two matches, a return built on the contributions of their returning World Cup winners. Coach JP Pietersen acknowledged his nerves before kick-off, having had only one training session with his Springbok contingent, but praised their professionalism and impact.

"I was nervous before the game because we only had one training session with the Springboks, but I chose the Boks because they are elite players and how professional they are," Pietersen said. "They did what they needed to do when we needed it, and we needed that injection when Eben created an outstanding try."

The coach highlighted the defensive resolve his international players brought in the closing stages. "We saw today that the Boks really wanted to be part of it. It's a World Cup season, and they want to show [Springbok coach] Rassie Erasmus they can start. We needed their defence to get us over the line, and in the last 10 minutes you really have to credit our defence because we were under the pump."

Esterhuizen led from the front in terms of physicality and effort, while Van der Merwe was named man of the match for his incisive running and prowess in the air. The wing also scored an intercept try that left Pietersen still processing the manner of the victory. "To win against the champions is really special, and we got five points, so we will enjoy tonight," he said. "I'm still processing the fact we have won two and have 10 points. It's unreal."

The perfect start to the campaign will sharpen focus on whether the Sharks can sustain their form as the URC schedule intensifies. For Etzebeth and his Springbok teammates, the performance offers a timely reminder of their credentials ahead of the international season, with individual brilliance and collective steel combining to overcome one of Europe's finest sides.
