The Sharks' first URC defeat of the season came with a significant injury toll, with Eben Etzebeth and Vusi Moyo both forced off during Saturday's 22-39 loss to the Stormers at DHL Stadium.

Moyo lasted only 18 minutes before leaving the field with what Sharks head coach JP Pietersen confirmed was a dislocated shoulder. He was later seen on the bench with his arm in a sling. Etzebeth followed him off in the 33rd minute with what Pietersen described as a knee or upper leg complaint.

Crucially, both players departed while the score was still 8-8. "When we lost Vusi and Eben, the score was still in the balance," Pietersen noted. The Sharks' afternoon unravelled further when Matt Romao and Manu Tshituka were both sin-binned in the first half, leaving the side defending with 13 men for a period. Romao's yellow card came for a dangerous low tackle on Stormers centre Jonathan Roche in the 34th minute.

The Sharks crossed three times but ultimately conceded six tries, with Pietersen acknowledging his side made far too many errors against quality opposition. He was measured in defeat, crediting the Stormers — URC winners and two-time finalists in recent seasons — while identifying discipline and the loss of momentum as the critical turning points.

"A few years ago, we would easily lose by 60 points with 13 men," Pietersen said, pointing to the scoreline as evidence of some resilience under extreme pressure.

The Sharks now face a quick turnaround, with their European Challenge Cup opener against Lyon next week.
