Both South Africa and England have been hit by late withdrawals ahead of Saturday's Nations Championship match at Ellis Park — the first such fixture to be played on South African soil.

Eben Etzebeth has been ruled out with a concussion, while Siya Kolisi is sidelined by a grade 1 ankle strain expected to keep him out for two to three weeks. The news was first broken by Rapport.

With Etzebeth out, Pieter-Steph du Toit shifts from blindside flank to lock, partnering Ruan Nortje in the second row. Cameron Hanekom moves into the blindside flank vacancy created by that reshuffle. Kolisi's No 6 jersey goes to Paul de Villiers, who comes in from outside the original match-day 23 to earn his first Test cap. Ben-Jason Dixon, capable of covering both flank and lock, is the likely loose-forward replacement on the bench.

With the captaincy now open, vice-captain Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel are the leading candidates to lead the side. Both have captained the Boks previously.

England have their own injury concern, with fullback George Furbank ruled out after a bout of appendicitis. Marcus Smith is set to take over at fullback for the visitors.
