Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has declared Eben Etzebeth and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu fit for selection ahead of next weekend's one-off Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires, providing a significant boost as the world champions prepare for their four-match series against New Zealand.
Etzebeth's return is particularly significant. The most-capped Springbok of all time missed all three Nations Championship fixtures after being placed on an extended break from contact rugby due to persistent headaches following concussions. Feinberg-Mngomezulu, who sustained an injury during the URC, has adhered strictly to his rehabilitation schedule and will be available for the Argentina fixture.
Erasmus confirmed on Tuesday that only two players from the assembled squad would be unavailable for the Buenos Aires encounter. Franco Mostert and Ox Nche remain sidelined with longer-term injuries, but the remainder of the group—including captain Siya Kolisi and returning players André Esterhuizen, Wilco Louw, Lood de Jager and Ethan Hooker—have been cleared to face Los Pumas.
"First and foremost, we want to beat Argentina – just like every other team, we want to win every Test match we play," Erasmus said. "Then there's the bigger picture, the Rugby World Cup, which is close to a year away, but you also have to respect the team you play next week."
The squad assembled in Johannesburg on Sunday for two days of training before a rest day on Wednesday and final preparations on Thursday. The travelling party, to be announced on Saturday, will depart for South America in two groups, whilst the remaining players return to Johannesburg to begin preparations for the All Blacks series.
Timing critical ahead of Greatest Rivalry
With the first Test against New Zealand scheduled a fortnight after the Argentina fixture, the Buenos Aires encounter assumes heightened importance as a final opportunity for match sharpness. Erasmus acknowledged the timing was not ideal for players returning from injury but emphasised the value of the fixture in his planning.
The overall health of the squad represents a relative success given recent challenges at both club and international level. Kwagga Smith and RG Snyman remain long-term absentees, but the return of senior figures provides Erasmus with selection depth as the Springboks enter a critical window in their World Cup cycle. The Argentina Test will determine whether those returning players can immediately slot into the intensity required for the Greatest Rivalry series.
