Rassie Erasmus has revealed that South Africa Rugby Union blocked his attempt to cap Bristol Bears centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg after the governing body had already committed to England and World Rugby that the Springboks would not pursue the player.
The South Africa-born midfielder, named in England's extended 36-man squad for the Nations Championship, was in direct contact with Erasmus earlier this year and expressed strong interest in representing the Springboks. However, the head coach could not guarantee him Test rugby in 2024, a promise that ultimately proved decisive in Janse van Rensburg's decision to commit to England.
"We had conversations with him and he was very keen to come," Erasmus confirmed on Tuesday. "Our CEO asked me if I was interested in Benhard Janse van Rensburg and I said yes, obviously we were. We just had to see where he fitted into our pecking order. He asked me, 'Are you going to cap him this year?' and I said, 'No, I don't think so.'"
The situation shifted in June when injuries left the Springboks thin at centre ahead of fixtures against the Barbarians and South Africa A. Erasmus reconsidered giving Janse van Rensburg an opportunity, only to discover that SA Rugby had already made assurances to England and World Rugby. "When I phoned the CEO, he said we couldn't because he had already committed to England and to World Rugby that we wouldn't go that route," Erasmus said.
Janse van Rensburg does not fully qualify for England until 8 July, ruling him out of Saturday's clash with the Springboks at Ellis Park. He has already represented England XV in their defeat to France XV and is expected to make his Test debut when Steve Borthwick's side face Fiji at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium later in the Nations Championship.
Springbok midfield depth remains formidable
The Springboks' reluctance to guarantee Janse van Rensburg immediate Test rugby reflects the depth of their midfield stocks. Jesse Kriel remains one of the world's premier outside centres, whilst Damian de Allende continues to anchor the No.12 jersey. André Esterhuizen and Ethan Hooker offer contrasting physical dimensions, with a further pipeline of talent emerging from the Junior Springboks.
The episode underscores the complexities of international eligibility in the residency era. Janse van Rensburg's choice was not a rejection of South Africa but a pragmatic decision based on the clearer pathway England could offer. For the Springboks, the loss of a player they were monitoring is mitigated by the strength of their existing midfield options and the knowledge that SA Rugby's commitment to World Rugby prevented a late scramble that might have damaged relationships with the RFU. Whether Janse van Rensburg will face his country of birth in future fixtures remains a question that will sharpen the narrative around residency rules and international selection.
