The Springboks concluded an important two-day training block in Johannesburg on Saturday as Rassie Erasmus brought his entire squad into alignment ahead of the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series opener against the All Blacks at Ellis Park on 22 August.

The 26-man travelling party that secured a 17-10 victory over Argentina in Buenos Aires last week returned to South Africa in two groups on Monday night and Tuesday. Erasmus prioritised recovery over immediate field sessions, with the squad spending most of the week on flush-out and gym work to readjust to the domestic time zone following the physical encounter against Los Pumas.

"It was important to manage the players who travelled to Argentina well and afford them sufficient time to recover from the match and switch back into the domestic time zone, which is why we only started training as a full group late in the week," said Erasmus. "But we are pleased that the players are well recovered and ready to give everything for the forthcoming Tests against the All Blacks."

The squad returned to the training field on Friday before a second session on Saturday, after which the players were granted a day and a half off to spend time with their families before entering full Test-week mode. Hooker Johan Grobbelaar and utility forward Elrigh Louw, released to play for the Vodacom Bulls against the All Blacks on Friday evening, will rejoin the national squad on Sunday.

Four-Test Gauntlet Ahead

The series represents a formidable challenge, with four back-to-back Tests scheduled across three continents. After the Ellis Park opener, the sides will meet at DHL Stadium in Cape Town on 29 August, return to FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on 5 September, and conclude the series at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on 12 September.

The condensed schedule leaves little room for error or extended recovery periods, placing a premium on squad depth and rotation management. Erasmus's decision to field a rotated squad in Buenos Aires appears designed to keep his full complement fresh for the gruelling month ahead, whilst also providing match sharpness to players who featured less prominently during the unbeaten Nations Championship campaign in July.

With the All Blacks arriving in South Africa unbeaten on their franchise tour, the opening Test at Ellis Park will set the tone for what promises to be a defining series in the international calendar.
