Rassie Erasmus has named a near-unchanged side for Saturday's third test against New Zealand, making just two adjustments to the team that won 33-26 in Cape Town: Cheslin Kolbe shifts to fullback, with Kurt-Lee Arendse coming in on the wing.
Despite initial plans to rotate more heavily through Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series, Erasmus said the state of the series made the selection call straightforward. With the Boks level at 1-1 after losing the opener and winning in Cape Town, he regards the third test as a pivotal moment — one that will determine whether South Africa head to Baltimore with the series in hand or still level.
"This is a series which you must win," Erasmus said at Monday's announcement. "We lost the first game, we won the second game, and we thought continuity would be the best thing for one of the more important games of the series. Because even though the series won't be won this weekend, it certainly can determine if it's going to be a draw or we are closer to winning the series."
Erasmus pushed back on concerns about fatigue after a high-intensity sequence of tests, pointing to minute-by-minute comparisons across the last six tests. He estimates the Boks have played roughly 60 minutes less per man than their All Black counterparts over that period, giving South Africa a physical edge heading into the weekend.
"I looked at the minutes that the New Zealand players played over the last six tests, because for me that's normally the indication, and we probably, per man, played sixty minutes less than them, so hopefully we won't be punch-drunk for this game."
He also addressed the pattern of flat Springbok performances in back-to-back World Cup knockout matches, noting the turnaround disadvantage the Boks often carried in those situations — a factor he does not see as relevant here.
Thirty players have featured across the first two tests, and Erasmus expects that number to reach 36 by the time the series concludes in Baltimore, leaving only four squad members without a run in the series.
On the injury front, Damian Willemse's hamstring complaint is not serious, with Willemse, Canan Moodie, Grant Williams and Handré Pollard all expected to be available for the final test.
The third test kicks off at 17h10 on Saturday and is broadcast live on SuperSport.
