Rassie Erasmus has set the tone for the inaugural Nations Championship by naming a formidable Springbok lineup to face England at Ellis Park on Saturday, with the starting XV boasting 935 caps between them.
Manie Libbok has won the race for the No 10 jersey, earning the nod ahead of other options in the absence of the injured Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. The attacking flyhalf has been in strong form for Kintetsu Liners in Japan's second division, including a 34-point haul against Hino Red Dolphins in April. His selection represents a significant opportunity to cement an extended run in the starting side.
The team sheet features the return of Eben Etzebeth, who has been thrust back into international action with minimal preparation. The giant lock served a 12-week ban following a red card for an eye gouge on Wales' Alex Mann during the Springboks' 73-0 victory in Cardiff, only returning to action for the Sharks against Connacht in April. He enters Saturday's clash with just one match under his belt since the Autumn Nations Series in November.
England's expansive threat
Erasmus confirmed at Monday's press conference that he expects England to adopt an attacking approach, influenced by the presence of six Northampton Saints players in Steve Borthwick's squad. The Premiership champions provide halfbacks Alex Mitchell and Finn Smith, winger Tommy Freeman, and forwards Alex Coles, George Furbank and Henry Pollock.
"Yeah there is a lot (of Saints' players) and they also played still last weekend," Erasmus said. "That's why we say it's tough to quickly align people but if they have a lot of Northampton players in - the 9 and 10 will be the same, there might be a wing that's the same and we think there's a few of their guys going to be in."
The Springbok coach suggested the Saints contingent's winning mentality could prove advantageous for England, though he noted the challenge of rapid alignment for both sides.
On the bench, 22-year-old prop Zachary Porthen has been included as part of the next generation of front-rowers. With Thomas du Toit, Ox Nché, Vincent Koch, Wilco Louw and Frans Malherbe all now in their thirties, Porthen's three caps position him well for a long-term role in the squad. The selection represents a statement of intent from Erasmus, who has used 60 players across fixtures against the Barbarians, Zimbabwe and England as he casts the net wide ahead of the four-Test series against New Zealand and the 2027 World Cup. Saturday's opener will test whether that blend of experience and emerging talent can deliver against leading opposition in a tournament setting.
