Rassie Erasmus has confirmed Siya Kolisi was fit to play in Saturday's opening Test against New Zealand but chose to leave him out as a precautionary measure, with three more Tests in the series still to come.

"Siya probably could have played but risking him this weekend and then getting to match three of the series with a lot of walking wounded is something we don't want," Erasmus said. Paul de Villiers takes the No 6 jersey for what will be his first Test against the All Blacks.

The same logic applies to the second-row selection. Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert are both absent from the matchday squad, with Eben Etzebeth and Ruan Nortje paired together. Erasmus was direct about their respective readiness: Mostert has logged just four minutes of rugby in the past six weeks after an early injury, while De Jager managed around 40 minutes against Argentina following several months of disruption.

Erasmus was equally clear that selection across the series will be driven by form, fitness and the specific demands of each Test rather than a fixed first-choice XV. "We have a solid group of players, and each one of them deserves their places in the squad, so we will approach team selection week by week."

On the opening Test itself, Erasmus pushed back against the idea that Saturday is decisive. "This game on Saturday is definitely not the game that will determine the winner. We've seen it in the Lions series; we've seen it many times in World Cup pools. You lose a pool game, and it is about who's still standing and how many men you've still got fit and ready to go."

New Zealand's heavily publicised commitment to high-tempo rugby drew a characteristically measured response. Erasmus said the Springboks have specifically prepared to handle that intensity but expressed scepticism about whether it will materialise as advertised. "They've been preaching it all over in the media. I've got no doubt that they will not play that way."

The breakdown shapes as the critical contest, with Erasmus identifying it as the area where the Springboks will need to impose themselves. Comparing the two squads on caps, age and recent minutes played, he expects a tight affair. "It's fairly even. So I think it's going to be a grind."
