Handré Pollard will start at flyhalf for the Springboks in Cape Town on Saturday, with Rassie Erasmus citing the veteran's record and local knowledge as decisive factors in the selection race.
The decision sees Manie Libbok drop to the bench as South Africa look to level the series following their opening defeat at Ellis Park. Erasmus acknowledged that the matchday 23 differs from his original plans, shaped by both injury setbacks and the need to respond to last weekend's result.
"To be honest with you, we had a little bit of a different team in mind, we hoped we could win the first Test match and we wanted to try some things," Erasmus told reporters on Monday. Injuries to Kolbe and Grant Williams have ruled both out of the encounter, with Ethan Hooker and Cobus Reinach stepping in.
Bench use under scrutiny
Erasmus admitted he misjudged his replacements strategy in Johannesburg, prompting a reshuffle of the bench. Deon Fourie, Thomas du Toit, Lood de Jager, Cameron Hanekom and Morne van den Berg have all been drafted into the eight, while Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu drops out of the starting side.
The flyhalf change mirrors last year's pattern, when Pollard was handed the playmaking duties in Cape Town after an Ellis Park reverse against Australia. Erasmus suggested the selection was not pre-planned but driven by circumstance.
"We hoped that Canan [Moodie] would be fit. I would have loved to play Cheslin again – he has only played 80 minutes for us prior to this," the head coach said. Kolbe's workload had been carefully managed given the physical demands on the wing, but injury has now forced the issue.
