Rassie Erasmus has resisted the temptation to experiment against Italy, naming a heavily experienced side for Saturday's Nations Championship fixture in Turin and leaving the six uncapped players in his touring party without game time.
The selection features 10 World Cup winners in the starting XV and a further three on the bench, bringing the total to 13. It marks a departure from Erasmus' historical approach to fixtures against teams ranked outside the world's top five, where he has previously backed untested talent. Last November, the Springbok coach handed a debut to Stormers prop Zachary Porthen against Japan after only a handful of franchise appearances, a decision that raised eyebrows at the time.
This year's touring squad includes Yaqeen Ahmed, Sebastian de Klerk, Luan Giliomee, Markus Muller, Riley Norton and Emmanuel Tshituka, none of whom will feature in the matchday 23. Erasmus explained that passive exposure to the Springbok environment holds limited value compared to meaningful involvement.
"It doesn't help to have a player here and he sees everything but doesn't get a feel for it," Erasmus said. "Yaqeen is with us now, and he also injured his shoulder and stood on the sidelines at training today, but the point I want to get to is that it doesn't help to have a player here and he sees everything but doesn't get a feel for it."
Tournament Context Shapes Selection
The decision reflects the unique nature of the November window, with the Springboks competing in the inaugural Nations Championship whilst simultaneously building depth ahead of the 2027 World Cup. South Africa face Italy before a six-day turnaround to meet France in Paris, followed by a clash with Ireland in Dublin. A final on 29 November remains a possibility if the Springboks hold off the All Blacks to finish atop the southern conference.
Italy's injury crisis — 17 players unavailable for the fixture — had fuelled expectations that Erasmus would rotate heavily. Instead, the head coach has prioritised continuity and momentum, banking on a statement performance to set the tone for the tour.
Morne van den Berg's inclusion at scrum-half underscores the shift towards settled combinations. The Lions number nine has impressed since stepping in for the injured Grant Williams during the Rugby Championship, earning starts against the All Blacks and Australia. His selection ahead of the uncapped options signals Erasmus' intent to take no risks, even against depleted opposition.
The approach leaves the six rookies in a holding pattern, awaiting opportunities that may or may not materialise later in the tour. For now, experience trumps experimentation as the Springboks target a commanding opening statement in Turin.
