The move marks a departure from the pattern established during the Nations Championship, when Erasmus named his sides on Mondays, and from the Tuesday announcements that characterised much of his tenure. The delay makes tactical sense given the selection dilemmas facing the Springbok management and the uncertain fitness of several key figures.
Siya Kolisi is understood to be touch-and-go for the captaincy. Should the flanker fail to prove his readiness, Paul de Villiers — the emerging star of the Boks' unbeaten 2026 campaign to date — is favourite to wear the number six jersey. De Villiers has impressed throughout the Nations Championship and would represent continuity in the loose trio.
Nché return on the cards
Ox Nché has not featured since sustaining an injury in the first half of the opening Championship match in Johannesburg in early July. The loosehead prop is understood to be back in contention, with a decision expected early in the week. Nché's return would restore what many regard as the world's premier scrummaging unit and add significant ballast to the Springbok pack.
Should both Kolisi and Nché prove their fitness, South Africa could field close to full strength for the first time since the England fixture on 4 July. The only long-term absentees from the core group remain RG Snyman and Kwagga Smith.
The delayed announcement also reflects the depth of options available to Erasmus. Damian Willemse has cemented his position at full-back after a commanding Nations Championship, particularly in the aerial battle against England. Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse are expected to occupy the wings, with the centre pairing of Jesse Kriel and Damian de Allende offering defensive solidity and attacking threat in equal measure.
The Thursday reveal ensures New Zealand will have minimal time to adjust their preparation. With the series set to define both sides' seasons, Erasmus has chosen to maximise every tactical advantage available.
