Rassie Erasmus has spoken at length about the quartet of debutants he is unleashing against Wales in Durban on Saturday, expressing particular confidence in fly-half Vusi Moyo and wing Jaco Williams — both products of last year's Junior World Championship-winning squad.
Moyo, who still qualifies at U20 level, steps into a number 10 jersey that has been shared between Handré Pollard, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Manie Libbok since the 2023 World Cup triumph. Erasmus rates him as an atypical rookie — physically imposing, technically sound and mentally composed.
"He's nice and calm," Erasmus told reporters in Durban. "He's a wonderful kicker of the ball — restarts, kicks to touch, kicks to the poles. But that's not been in Test matches. So we want to see him in a Test match. For a big man, he's got really good soft hands."
Williams, 21, was similarly praised. Erasmus acknowledged the absence of Cheswill Jooste and the injury to Riley Norton before explaining why Williams earned his spot. "I always thought he was just a nippy finisher but he's certainly a guy that brings it on the physical side as well. He's a really powerful player and a guy with a lot of speed and X-factor."
At 28, lock Ruben van Heerden arrives with a different narrative — one of prolonged patience in the Bok environment rather than youthful emergence. Erasmus indicated Van Heerden has spent several weeks in camp simulating opposition locks during Test preparation, and turned down a second Barbarians appearance this year in favour of pursuing an SA 'A' opportunity instead.
"Ruben played against us last year with the Barbarians and defensively made a good claim — how he tackled," said Erasmus. "He's been preparing for six, seven weeks. It's nice to reward somebody, not by giving out caps for free."
Tighthead Carlu Sadie completes the four debutants named in the matchday squad.
