Rassie Erasmus has welcomed back a significant contingent of injured personnel as the Springboks prepare for their Test against Argentina in Buenos Aires on 8 August, with ten players returning to bolster what appears to be the closest approximation yet of his preferred squad.
Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Franco Mostert, Siya Kolisi, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Morné van den Berg all return after missing the Nations Championship through injury. Handré Pollard, Ethan Hooker, Canan Moodie and Andre Esterhuizen have also been declared fit following knocks sustained across the three-Test series against England, Scotland and Wales. Seven of the returning players hold World Cup winners' medals, with some possessing two.
The 43-man group contains no uncapped players, a deliberate departure from the experimental selections that characterised the Nations Championship. After rotating extensively through that tournament, Erasmus now has access to what one assessment described as his "absolute full-noise group" ahead of the biggest Test block arguably since the 2023 World Cup. The depth available is considerable: across multiple positions, the head coach could field several starting XVs capable of challenging any tier-one nation.
Strategic Shift Ahead of All Blacks Series
Five players have been released to their franchises to prepare for matches against the All Blacks. Ntuthuko Mchunu, Evan Roos and Andre-Hugo Venter return to the Stormers, Jaco Williams to the Sharks, and Embrose Papier to the Bulls. Ruben van Heerden, who is heading to Montpellier, has been placed on standby.
The returning personnel will require match minutes ahead of the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series, which begins later in August. Erasmus acknowledged the management challenge, stating the coaching staff had "put a lot of thought into how we will manage the entire group of players to give everyone a chance to stake a claim for places in the squad for the RGR series."
The selection for Buenos Aires is expected to differ markedly from the side that defeated Wales 43-0, though it may not precisely mirror the XVs deployed against England or Scotland either. With Argentina providing the final opportunity for game time before the All Blacks arrive, the balance between reintegrating key figures and maintaining momentum from the Nations Championship whitewash will define Erasmus' approach in the coming fortnight.
