The Springboks will use Saturday's clash with Argentina to reintegrate a host of returning stars, with assistant coach Deon Davids confirming that Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Siya Kolisi and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu are all set to feature in Buenos Aires after spells on the sidelines.
Davids dismissed any notion that the one-off Test—which carries no Rugby Championship points due to the tournament's 2026 sabbatical—represents a warm-up fixture. "It's a big Test match for us," Davids said. "It has never been easy, especially in Buenos Aires, so it's important that we improve on the areas of our game in which we would like to. We are also very clear in terms of what we want to achieve, so our focus will be on ourselves and trying to play the way we want to against a formidable opponent."
The assistant coach stressed that the match serves multiple purposes for South Africa. "This is a very important match for us," Davids explained. "We've got certain goals for the year, and we see this as a Test match that we want to win first of all, but also one where we want to set certain standards for ourselves." He highlighted balance, control, consistency and discipline as key areas for improvement across all departments.
The return of experienced forwards Etzebeth and De Jager provides a significant boost to the Springbok pack. "It's fantastic to have Eben and Lood back, and also the other players who haven't played in a while," Davids said, underlining the importance of squad depth ahead of a demanding end to the season. "As a group, it's important that we have enough depth as part of our strategic goals. The players who play this week, just like those who played in the previous games, must be able to perform at the same level and move towards the same standards we want to achieve as a team."
