Steve Borthwick has confirmed Henry Pollock will start on the bench for England's Nations Championship opener against the Springboks at Ellis Park on Saturday, framing the decision as a deliberate tactical choice rather than a question of form.
Borthwick named Jamie George as captain, with Ellis Genge and Ollie Chessum as vice-captains. The bench configuration is a six-two split, with Pollock joining Guy Pepper among the forward replacements, and Alex Mitchell and Marcus Smith providing the backline cover.
"Henry Pollock has been playing really well, and there's good competition in that back row," Borthwick said in Johannesburg. "I'm looking forward to seeing him come off the bench — there's a real dynamism around those players and great skill sets. I think it's the right blend for who to start and who to finish."
Borthwick acknowledged that opposition sides have consistently tried to neutralise Pollock's influence, pointing to his disruptive off-the-ball presence as both an asset and a target. "They will try to nullify that. I've seen that over and over, yet Henry Pollock always seems to thrive," he said.
The England head coach arrives in Johannesburg having won just one of his five Tests against South Africa, and following a difficult Six Nations campaign. He was measured in his assessment of the task ahead. "We know South Africa are a wonderful side. They've been the benchmark of World Rugby for a considerable period of time. Playing against the best in the world, I want our players to bring their very best version."
