The Springbok Women claimed their first home win of the season, defeating the USA 34-21 at Ellis Park on Saturday after a commanding first-half performance that put the contest beyond doubt.
South Africa led 29-0 at the break and extended that to 34-0 early in the second half before the Eagles rallied with three late tries. The Boks' dominant platform was built on a physical forward pack, set-piece control and quick ball through the backline.
A shaky opening — a miscommunication from kick-off followed by a knock-on — handed the USA an early scrum penalty, but the visitors failed to capitalise. South Africa immediately turned the ball over and struck first through Ayanda Malinga, making her first Test start at outside centre, who finished after Vainah Ubisi created the opening from a quick tap by Unam Tose. Jakkie Cilliers converted to make it 7-0 inside six minutes.
The forward pack tightened its grip from there. Tose, earning her 30th cap, powered over from repeated pick-and-go phases to extend the lead, before captain Babalwa Latsha crashed over from close range following strong carries from Alisha Arries and Danelle Lochner.
Logan Welman then took over. The No.8, in only her fourth Test, scored in the corner before completing her brace at the back of a dominant scrum just before halftime. Cilliers' boot ensured the Boks went to the break 29-0 ahead. Ubisi added a fifth try shortly after the restart to stretch it to 34-0.
The USA grew into the game as the half wore on, aided by altitude fatigue and South Africa's rotation. Freda Tafuna bulldozed over for the first Eagles score, Ashley Cowdrey crossed for her first Test try on debut, and Elizabeth Cook added a third. Bella Vogel converted all three to close the gap to 34-21, but the Boks held firm.
Welman was the standout performer, combining penetrating carries with her try double. Ubisi was effective throughout — scoring and setting up the opener — while Lochner's work rate at the breakdown and in contact was a consistent feature of the Boks' best play.
