The All Blacks have signalled their intent ahead of Friday's tour opener against the Stormers in Cape Town, with loose forward Simon Parker warning the tourists are approaching every fixture with Test-match intensity.
The clash at Cape Town Stadium marks the beginning of a six-week, eight-match tour that includes four games against South African franchise sides and four Tests against the Springboks, the last of which will be played in the United States.
"We're treating every game as if it were a test match," Parker said on Monday as the tourists continued their preparations. "We're training for every match as we would a Test match and whoever gets to pull the jersey on has a responsibility to go out there and perform."
The 26-year-old suggested the tour opener represents an opportunity to lay down an early marker ahead of the Test series. "I think it's a great opportunity for us. It one we looking to go and win," he said.
Parker acknowledged the physical challenge awaiting the tourists, particularly against South African opposition. "Physically, obviously, will be important too, 100%. That's no surprise playing against South Africans; that's what they are, that's part of their DNA, so it's a battle we're looking forward to."
All Blacks forwards coach Jason Ryan echoed the importance of the opening fixtures, revealing the touring party includes 10 new players and several debutants. "I think it's really important we start with a bit of confidence, and we get into our game," Ryan said in Cape Town.
Following the Stormers clash, New Zealand will face the Sharks in Durban on 11 August and the Bulls in Pretoria on 15 August before the opening Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park on 22 August.
