South Africa A ran in six tries to blank Zimbabwe 40-0 in Gqeberha on Saturday, but the comprehensive win was overshadowed by a red card for flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed that could threaten his participation in the Junior World Championship later this month.

Ahmed had been one of the standout performers, opening the scoring with a sharp individual try after weaving through several defenders. He also slotted three conversions before his afternoon unravelled when he chipped over the defence and then deliberately took out Zimbabwean fullback Tapuwa Mafura in the air. The bunker confirmed the red card shortly after, and Ahmed walked off fully aware of the implications. A suspension could rule him out of the Junior World Championship.

Wing Zekhetelo Siyaya is another Junior Boks concern after leaving the field requiring medical attention.

Despite finishing with 14 men, SA A were never seriously threatened. Teenage centre Markus Muller crossed following sharp forward-back interplay, before Haashim Pead — last season's World Junior Player of the Year — dummied his way over from a scrum. Nico Steyn, Immy Khan and Jaco Williams completed the scoring, with Luan Gillomee adding two conversions to Ahmed's three.

Zimbabwe, preparing for next year's World Cup qualifying campaign, showed some intent in possession but lacked the finishing to convert their opportunities. With Ahmed off the field they found marginally more traction, though never threatened the scoreline.

The curtain-raiser to the Springboks-Barbarians match at a half-filled Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium served as a vivid reminder of the depth in South African rugby, even if the red card left a sour note on what was otherwise an impressive afternoon for the country's next generation.
